All of the aforementioned towns, each of which used to be a separate municipality, have been incorporated into the new Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The East Rand is now an extremely important region in terms of the economics of Gauteng.
Many foreigners unknowingly begin their South African experience in the East Rand, as their first stop will be at OR Tambo airport (ORT), the busiest airport in Africa handling more than 14 million passengers a year and employing some 18000 people. ORT has recently completed a three-year rebuilding program. The airport is a 20-minute drive from the eastern suburbs of Johannesburg and a 45-minute trip from Sandton and Rosebank, where most hotels are found.
